in her eyes i see the sea
i don’t see what she see’s in a man like me

i meant for this post to be queued today, on diana’s death anniversary, but somehow it got lost on the queues -_-
i have to thank hayao miyazaki, for without him i wouldn’t have discovered diana wynne jones. i love his version of howl’s moving castle and it made me want to read the book. when i did, lo and behold it was very much different from the movie. personally, i love the original plot of the book more than of the movie, but as diana once put it, movies are very much different from books. and i’m sure it’s also miyazaki’s right to put some alterations with the story since, well, it’s his movie…
after reading the books i also discovered that she has been in the business for many years and has written tons of stories for children. i admit that i haven’t read any other dwj book except for the castle series, but based on those three books i can tell that diana is a very good storyteller. some say that jk rowling’s potter sries was inspired by diana. all i can say is that with marvelous inspirations comes amazing results. and look at the potter franchise now.
it’s fun to think that diana did an unorthodox approach to traditional fairy tales way before shrek movies did it. based on howl’s moving castle, the eldest sister can be the heroine of the story, charming men can be quite annoying, and protagonists can have quirky babies. oh, just typing down these words made me nostalgic for howl’s moving castle :’)
when i found out that diana died in the middle of making the fourth book, i was really devastated. i’m never gonna know what will happen next to howl and sophie. diana won’t be around anymore to make other good stories. it’s sad when an author dies. a part of the reader’s life just dies too.
thank you dwj.
